Bootshaus Boathouse

The Somewhat different Boathouse

I was a bit surprised when Michael contacted me via Instagram and invited me to the boathouse. A ZEN PLACE in the middle of a residential area? In the Hessian province? We talked on the phone about how the boathouse came into being. It was the history about the place – especially the pictures – that finally won me over, so I set out on the last golden autumn weekend to make my own impression of the place.

On my arrival, I park my Fiat and take a look around. I am expected. The large iron gate, inconspicuous from the outside, slides open.

And then I literally enter another world. I’m really surprised how much this place stands out from its surroundings.

I’m standing at the foot of a lawn that leads slightly uphill to the pool. And there is this pavilion made of glass and black steel.

Calm and simple. And very much to my taste.

The contrast between the rather bourgeois outside world and this little gem really is huge.

Unexpected, surprising, full of contrasts and yet somehow harmonious.

You can still see the rest of Eppertshausen over the fence, but here a very unique world has emerged. Amazingly beautiful.

The house is open, airy; the decor consists of lots of individual pieces that fit together well. Furniture classics and found objects, with a very personal touch.

Michael tells me that he actually built the house for himself, as a retreat from everyday life. It was only after a few years that it became clear that he wanted to open its doors and make the space available to visitors. To live, think, work and simply be.

Full board or self-catering. Michael is a chef and has run several different restaurants in Frankfurt over the years. During this time he has specialized in the production of regional delicacies. He knows what makes a good host, so I got to enjoy the freshly made treats that he cooked for us in his kitchen.

There are many ways to use this place. People who are looking for somewhere to kick back are just as welcome as those who are interested in food, local ingredients and cooking.

Where else do you get to go mushrooming with an expert or visit local farmers?

I found the place to be very inspiring and inviting. Special and intimate.
